The closest you could get to 'joining' the 5th column, or any NPC faction, would probably be the same way you 'join' arachnos if you play redside - the game plays out the same, but there are specific faction story arcs as you level. It would be a fair amount of work to add all these missions, but it's entirely doable if someone feels like doing it.

Hmm I have already a villain character that I don't use anymore because it had a i25 class which got changed, though if I recall correctly even on the villain side there were missions where the player had to fight off against 5th column. From the rogue quest giver I got from him a fight against 5th column mission and while I was on the red side maps I have gotten a tip mission of that too. So I assumed there was no such thing as being allied with this NPC faction.
Actually when I think about it, I guess a "token item" could be used which when the player has one then it excludes the faction from being selected which the player belongs to during a random generated mission, though for non RNG missions a different solution would be needed.

It would be interesting if the CoH original devs went the way World of Warcraft did with Factions or groups and let you build Reputation with different factions and gave rewards or joinable options.
Maybe in the future that is something we may pursue when we release our first series of new story arcs and content.

Maybe in the future that is something we may pursue when we release our first series of new story arcs and content. That would be great as it would make the world slightly more dynamic. I was thinking more of Clear Sky/Call of Chernobyl faction system, in Clear Sky the player had to do a couple missions for a eligible faction before he can join all factions except for Monolith, Renegades and Ecologist could be joined. All factions had their own trader which offers different equipment, the main difference is mostly with armor and less with weapons, there might have been a few more differences but I cannot recall it.
